It’s Not Always Black and White

A Story of Two “Brothers”

When you think of contrast you think of black and white, big and small, sweet and sour. But do you think of black and ginger? Around the Sanctuary, we never say who will click and who won’t. One day, a young lady called Mark and Dorothy. She was referred to the sanctuary. She had to surrender a couple of cats. She had three, but only took one with her. All they knew was they would need a large unit to transport one of the cats because he was BIG. They set up the transport cage and brought two transport units as well. When they got to the location and met the young lady, they saw her smile. At the same time, tears were in her eyes. She said she had had one cat for most of his life. He was now ten years old. She had just taken in the other one about six months earlier. When she brought them out one at a time, we met a long, skinny ginger and white tom. We also saw a VERY LARGE muscular black boy. The ginger and white was the one she had taken in. The black had been with her for many years. He just celebrated his eleventh birthday at the Sanctuary in 2018. The ginger and white had only been with them a short time. Still, the black was looking after him like an older brother would. In a short time, Mark and Dorothy had been in contact with the cats, and they saw the connection. The ginger and white did not like the idea of change. The black was trying to comfort him. They settled into their new home.

So, who are these boys? The ginger and white became known as Cobain. After talking to Dorothy, our cat whisperer, he held his head high as he chose it. The black took the name DJango. Yes, DJango continued to look after Cobain as his younger brother, even scolding him from time to time. They both love Daddy, but Cobain chose Sister Dorothy as his number one while Django, chose Daddy, Mark, as his. Just something about Ginger cats and Dorothy.

Well, now daddy has two cats watching over him, both Toppie and DJango, while sister has Ms. Donna and Cobain. Those two have a habit of curling up on their respective desks. They insist on “helping” with whatever their humans are working on. When they stretch, things move, and the humans better be sure they’re ready. Cobain is so spoiled that he insists on his meals being served on Sister’s desk. He also insists on knowing what “His Girl,” Sister, is doing. He wants to know where she’s going whenever she leaves the desk. In almost the same way, DJango must know what his dad is up to and where he’s going. They have their humans well-trained for sure.

When these two were asked about being adopted, they both looked at each other square in the eyes. They said, “You already adopted us. We are at our FUR-ever home.” With that, they had chosen.

Unfortunately, the Sanctuary had a case of Distemper run through the kittens. The kittens who had not yet had their shots were affected, and Cobain got hit by it. He did not survive, but instead of staying at the Sanctuary, he went off into the woods and passed on. DJango still looks after his Daddy along with Ms. Toppie, and is now a special part of Black Cat Rescue with Ms. Midnight and Ms. Abby. As for Sister, Ms. Donna Noble is doing very well with that job. DJango has set up a routine of “patrolling” the Sanctuary grounds twice a day. He knows where all the kids are. If any of the young ones get close to the front of the property, he scolds them. He gets them to back away to where they belong.

Some sad news from Crazy Cat Sanctuary. We just lost Django, but it was a long, happy life. Ten years with his former loving human and then several years with us. You live long in our hearts, Django. And you and Cobain enjoyed and followed in the many Kitty Adventures. Rest In Peace, boys. Now, Ms. Amelia is head of security on the property. She is watching over the kittens as they play outside, just like he did. She had a good teacher. She’s another story in herself.
